Joe Pickard, is the true British gentleman, living a double life. During the day he works in the office of the renowned high end Magazine Monocle, where he acts as the main editor of the travel guides. As he clocks out, he becomes an influential photographer, documenting the world’s hidden gems through his iPhone. His typical townhouse in North London has a fireplace in each room and in every corner, there are piles of the best travel guides, cookbooks and novels. The backyard windows of the house cast light over his desk as he writes about his last journey.
Julia Jean-Baptiste is what we see when we think of Paris. The 28-year-old singer, and almost DJ, as she says, grew up in Lyon, but has been living in Paris for the past 10 years. She lives in a little apartment that she shares with her husband just outside the 19th arrondissement. Every corner is full of souvenirs and gems from her family that originally derived from the Caribbean French Island of Martinique. She tells us the story of her roots, the music and the rhythms. The tones of Bossanova from her vinyl player softly fill the room as she hums along.
Carolina Flores, artist and designer, lives in Ajuda, a little village just outside Lisbon’s city centre. Her apartment, which is also her studio, is full of magazines, art books, little sculptures and of course – her paintings. From her studio space, she has a spectacular view over the 25 de Abril Bridge, so it’s easy to see where she gets her inspiration from. Her artworks are abstract, using the vibrant colors you find on all the façades of Lisbon. She spends most of her time in her studio together with her cat Zappa, named after the musician Frank Zappa, who follows her everywhere she goes.
